Is goat's milk lactose-free?

No. Goat’s milk contains less lactose than cow’s milk, but lactose is still present. If your child is intolerant to lactose, goat’s milk won’t be appropriate.

Why did LittleOak choose to use fresh whole goat’s milk?

LittleOak is made from whole goat’s milk. We don’t use cheap fillers to bulk up our product instead offer babies the natural goodness of goat’s milk – with less processing, less synthetic ingredients and more natural goodness.

Why is LittleOak better than other baby formulas?

LittleOak is created by mums who have been through exactly the same worries as you.

Drawing on the experience of a nutrition and paediatric expert, we understand how overwhelming it can be to make the right choice for your baby’s nutrition. With so many conflicting opinions and confusing terms, it can be impossible to know which way to turn.

We’ve gone on ahead and have done the research for you. Our team of experts have created a formula made with whole goat’s milk, cold-pressed flaxseed oil and natural vitamins and minerals. It is free of palm oil and canola oil.

What is the whey to casein ratio in your formulas?

Our whey to casein ratio for all 3 stages sits at around 20:80 which is the natural ratio for our goats milk. Goats milk has been scientifically proven to be more easily digested when consumed in its natural balance of whey to casein which is why we fell in love with it – for its natural goodness.

Does your formula cause any gas or constipation?

Goat’s milk is generally easier for babies to digest for several reasons. It has naturally occurring A2 casein and less than half the A1 casein protein found in cow’s milk, making it easier to digest. Like adults, the A1 protein can be the cause of many digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, wind, and pain in babies. Our goat’s milk is a rich source of nutrients including oligosaccharides, or pre-biotics, that assist digestion.

Is your formula organic?

Most of the whole goat milk we use is farmed using organic practices Although our formula is not organic, It’s quite a process to become an organically certified farm which is why many of the farms that we source our milk from choose not to pursue certification.

All of our ingredients are as naturally and sustainably sourced as possible, including our DHA and ARA (from algal sources) and more importantly, our cold-pressed flaxseed oil from the South Island in New Zealand.

Most of the whole goat’s milk we use is farmed using organic practices although our formula is not yet certified organic.

Are you available in any US shops? Do you ship to the USA?

Yes we are now selling online to the US.

Once paid and dispatched, it usually takes 3-5 business days for delivery.

Where do you source the oils used in your formula?

All of our other ingredients, as you know, are as natural as we can find and are sourced from the most sustainable sources including our DHA and ARA (from algal sources), and more importantly, our cold-pressed flaxseed oil from the South Island in New Zealand.

What methods are used to extract the DHA from your Algae source?

We use a Clay and Steam method that is natural and toxin free.

What does it mean to be proudly certified palm oil free?

We are the first infant formula in the world to be certified 100% Palm Oil Free by POFCAP. Palm oil inhibits the absorption of calcium, fats and DHA in babies so for us there was no question that we needed to find and use both alternative and better quality oils to provide the fatty acid and lipid profile in our products. Instead of palm oil, we use cold-pressed coconut oil and blended this with cold-pressed flaxseed oil and sunflower.

Why does LittleOak use cold-pressed flaxseed oil to replace canola oil?

We are also the first infant formula company in the world to use cold-pressed flaxseed oil from New Zealand to replace Canola Oil. Canola oil is a cheap oil that is extracted by hexane (essentially petroleum) and used by many companies. Instead, we prefer to use and source the highest quality ingredients to ensure we have the most natural infant formula available to mums and dads which is why we chose flaxseed. Flaxseed oil has many wonderful benefits in terms of its fatty acid profile but more excitingly recent research indicates that it may help babies rest and improve sleep.

DHA and ARA at levels that make a real difference

We source our DHA and ARA from the most natural algal sources. More importantly we include them at levels that are scientifically proven to make a real difference to a babies health, not just a “sprinkle” to secure a marketing claim. In many cases, our DHA is at levels that  are 4-5 times higher than competitors. We do this because scientifically we know that a baby needs more than 13g per 100ml serve to really benefit their growth and neural development.

Can I use LittleOak in a Baby Brezza?

To prepare LittleOak formula on Baby Brezza machine the best setting is number 5. However, the Baby Brezza settings change with different models. Please check the Baby Brezza website for the correct settings.

Can I use Liquids or Drinks in my Subo?

Subo bottles are best for feeding little ones pureed or mashed foods.
Some examples of ideal food:
LittleOak smoothies
Yoghurts
Pureed fruits and vegetables
Soft breakfast cereals soaked in milk

What are your contingency plans for the USA?

Given the increase in demand out of the US, we are increasing our production and shipments from Australia to ensure American families have formula to feed their children.

In parallel, we are working with our partners to prepare a submission to the FDA for to avail of their current discretion policy to allow for the temporary marketing of infant formulas that don’t current have FDA approval, but meet FDA guidelines – which LittleOak meets.

Are you experiencing any delays or expecting any delays?

At present, no. Our delivery times remain as 3-5 business days.

Can I use other stages of LittleOak outside of their recommended age brackets?

Our recommended age brackets are based on the nutritional intake required for certain ages and stages of growth. However, some of our formulas can be interchanged between age brackets. For instance, our Stage 1 and Stage 2 formulas are very similar – the key difference is that our Stage 2 is fortified with more iron than our Stage 1 – therefore, you can use our Stage 1 product right up to 12 months. Note that you can’t use our Stage 2 under 6 months.

Our general guideline is:

If your baby is 0-12 months you can continue to use Stage 1 right up to 12 months

If your baby is 6 months and under, you can only use Stage 1
If your baby is aged 5 -6 months you may be able to use Stage 2.

If your baby is 10 – 12 months, you may be able to use stage 3.
If your toddler is (12m+) you can use Stage 2.

If you need to switch to a different stage of LittleOak we recommended to first speak with a pediatrician or health care professional or speak to our Consumer Careline.

Do you offer discounts for multiples?

Yes, we do. We offer a percentage discount to support parents of multiples. We simply need a letter from your GP stating that you are supplement feeding/formula feeding multiples.

How do you transition from breastfeeding or another brand of formula to LittleOak?

It is so important to transition slowly from breastfeeding to formula or between different brands of formula. Changing too quickly from another formula to LittleOak or even from breastfeeding to LittleOak can cause your baby discomfort to their immature digestive system. Our qualified team is here to help and provide advice and guidance around the best transition plan that suits you and your little one.

Can I freeze the formula?

No, it is not recommended to freeze the formula powder.

Once the formula tin is opened, how long is the powder safe to use?

We recommend using the formula powder within 30 days but it can last up to 60 days if stored correctly – ie a cool, dry cupboard.

How is our quality of the formula powder protected in transit?
  1. Our formula is manufactured in the highest hygiene facilities and rigorously tested at every point of our production and transport.  Our formula is transferred from our production facility in NZ under our strict storage and transport and temperature-controlled guidelines. Our transport partners and warehouses all have HCCAP approved programs.
  2. Transfers to US/Canadian consumers take 24-48 hours via airfreight and the products are stored in controlled environments throughout the transfers.
  3. Our LittleOak can is rigorously tested and can withstand elevated temperatures for short periods (hours or days) without any compromise to the internal powder. For longer periods (weeks or months), our distribution centres always store the products below 25 degrees Celsius.
  4. We 100% guarantee the overall quality of our LittleOak formula regardless of where we are sending it across the world.
Why do you use Sunflower oil in your formula?

Infant formula contains oils to mimic the fatty acid profile in breast milk. Human milk contains a collection of essential fatty acids including linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid as well as additional long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fatty acids are required for normal development in infants and critical to the functioning of the nervous system.

Infant formulas must use a range of vegetables oils to achieve a similar balance of essential fatty acids found in infant formula. Manufacturers can decide to use high quality oils like coconut oil and flaxseed oil or more mass-produced and cheaper oils including canola and palm oil.

At LittleOak, we use cold-pressed coconut and flaxseed oils to deliver the majority of our fatty acids. In addition, we must utilise sunflower oil because it delivers essential oleic and linoleic fatty acids, which are important fats for all babies.

We are proud to be the first baby formula in the world to be certified 100% Palm Oil Free and the first in the world to use cold pressed flaxseed oil – sourced locally from the South Island of New Zealand. Palm oil inhibits the absorption of calcium, fats and DHA in babies so for us there was no question that we would never use palm oil or any derivatives in our formula.

Further, our oils are pressed and do not use any chemicals or solvents, like hexane, to extract the oil from the husk.

Why is our Whey to Casein ratio different to other formulas?

In regard to the whey to casein ratio our whey to casein ratio for all 3 stages sits at around 20:80 which is the natural ratio for our goats milk. Goats milk has been scientifically proven to be more easily digested when consumed in its natural balance of whey to casein which is why we fell in love with it – for its natural goodness.

Goat’s milk is generally easier for babies to digest for several reasons: Firstly, it naturally contains more A2 casein. Goat milk has less than half the A1 casein protein found in cow’s milk. Like in adults, the A1 protein can be the cause of many digestive issues such as bloating, constipation, wind, and pain in babies. Finally, our goat’s milk is a rich source of nutrients including oligosaccharides or pre-biotics that assist indigestion.

How is Taurine naturally occurring in LittleOak?

Taurine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in the human body and has many important functions including eye and brain development. Our fresh goat’s milk has naturally occurring levels which is why we don’t need to add a synthetic form. Many companies add Taurine in its synthetic form which is the same ingredient used in energy drinks like Red Bull.

The typical taurine levels found in our formula range as follows:

  • Stage 1 – 19.2 mg/100g of powder
  • Stage 2 – 20.5 mg/100g of powder
  • Stage 3 – 17.1 mg/100g of powder
Do you add any sugars or sweeteners to your formula?

For your peace of mind, we do not add any artificial sugars or sweeteners to our blends. We find our beautifully natural goats milk does not need any sugars or additives and do not want to introduce infants and toddlers to sugars unnecessarily.

What are the benefits of flaxseed oil in our blend?

At LittleOak, we use cold-pressed coconut and flaxseed oils to deliver most of our fatty acids. Many health benefits of flaxseed oil are supported by recent scientific research and extensive studies.

  1. Flaxseed is one of nature’s richest plant sources of Omega 3 fatty acids and in particular the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which the body uses to contribute to normal blood cholesterol levels. The ALA created by the body from Omega 3 fatty acids works alongside lignans to affect the white blood cells that help the immune system.
  2. Flaxseed is a great source of protein and this can be a great contributor to the development and maintenance of muscles and normal bones. As well as this, protein helps repair tissues and cells, which is good news for all those bumps and bruises kids tend to get growing up.
  3. Emerging science suggests that the high concentration of fatty acids in flaxseed oil, namely Omega 3, are beneficial for childs’ brain health, particularly its protective effects on the brain and its potential ability to reduce hyperactivity.

I have received a dented tin, is it safe to use?
We are so sorry to hear that you have received a dented tin in your order. Rest assured, we will never send a dented tin to our LittleOak families. However in rare occurrences, a tin may be dented in transit.
Most of the time, dented tins and the formula powder inside are fine and safe to use. As a first step, we recommend checking the following if you receive a dented tin:
  • Is there is any formula powder on the exterior of the tin?
  • Are there any holes/piercings where air might have got in?
  • Are the seams of the tin still sealed?
  • The foil seal under the lid is intact and not enlarged
Generally, it’s only if the tin is pierced and the formula powder has been exposed to air that we would advise not to use it. However, if you are at all unsure on the safety of the tins you have received, please email photos of the dented tins to our Careline at hello@thelittleoakcompany.com
Our highly experienced Careline team are all fully trained in assessing the structure and integrity of the tin, and will advise if the formula powder is safe to use. The health and wellbeing of our LittleOak families and precious Bubs are always our main priority, so please know we are here to help.
