It's safe to say that almost every parent has wondered at some point: "How do I raise my child to be a good person?" After all, isn’t that one of our greatest hopes as parents – to raise children who are kind, empathetic and compassionate? But the question still remains: how do we actually teach goodness?
Lead with actions, not just words
Children learn by watching us. Creating a home where emotions are welcomed and talked about openly is one of the most powerful ways to model goodness. When kids feel safe to share both their joys and their struggles, they not only understand themselves better, but also begin to develop empathy for others.
By showing kindness, gratitude and respect through your actions, you’re quietly sowing the seeds of goodness in your child. If you want to take it a step further, encourage them to practice small acts of kindness. These little nudges can help them see how much of a difference they can make in creating a kinder world.
Acts of kindness for children
-
Create a thoughtful drawing or handmade card for your teacher or parent
-
Donate some unused toys to your local charity shop
-
Call your grandparents, just to chat and brighten their day
-
Tell your sibling how much you love them
-
Include a new friend when you’re playing - no one should ever feel left out
-
Sing a song or perform a dance for your parents
-
Let mum, dad or your caregiver have a sleep-in (we can always dream!)
-
Share what you’re grateful for during dinner time
-
Collect clothes that don’t fit anymore and donate to a worthy cause
-
Gift a friend a book your child once enjoyed, with a note to pass it on
Wanting to make it more fun for your little one? Write these out (and include more of your own!) before putting them in a ‘Kindness Jar.’ Every day, your children can pick an act of kindness to perform and spread a little more love into the world.
