Iron-rich foods
for your little one

Iron-rich foods <br> for your little one

Supporting everything from brain function to energy production, iron is a super important nutrient for your bub. In fact, did you know that by the time your baby reaches six months of age, their iron needs are actually higher than an adult male? While babies build up iron stores during the last trimester of pregnancy, these stores are typically depleted by six months. That’s why it's super important to introduce iron-rich foods into your little one's diet. Here are some little suggestions, from our family to yours.

Iron-rich foods for your little one

  • Red meat: Clinical nutritionist Emma Morris recommends focusing on nutrient-dense red meats like beef or lamb.
  • Organ meats: If you can, try incorporating some beautiful, organic liver or organ meats for added nutritional goodness. Emma often cuts up chicken livers for her little one, but if that feels a bit much for you, you can grate frozen liver into purees. There’s also dried organ meat capsules and powders that you can stir into your child’s meal for added nutrition. Here’s a little tip from Emma: Don’t "yuck" your baby’s yum! When your little one is starting solids, they typically aren't picky eaters yet, so it’s the perfect time to introduce a wide variety of flavors and textures. This early exposure can be really beneficial for your bub’s development and preferences down the line.
  • Poultry: Chicken or turkey are also great sources of iron for your bub
  • Seafood: You can also try incorporating some fish into your little one's next meal. Think sardines, salmon, or tuna.
  • Plant sources of iron: Wholegrain foods (such as rolled oats or bread), legumes (such as lentils and beans), leafy green vegetables (like broccoli and spinach), eggs and nuts are also very good sources of iron.

Vitamin C has been shown to enhance iron absorption, so you may also want to consider incorporating plenty of citrus fruits and berries into your child’s diet.

William has now been on LittleOak for 3 months and we have found it very gentle on his stomach, particularly with the transition. Also found it doesn’t smell yucky like other formulas.
