Why shouldn't Palm Oil & Palm Olein Oil be in Your Child’s Formula?

By Katie Cornelius, Health Coach and Mum of 2

You have had your baby, you are doing all the things you have been told to do – sleep when the baby sleeps (yes, sure we all know how that one turns out!) eat well, ignore the housework, and enjoy each moment – but one topic I feel is not spoken about enough during postpartum is: what does my baby need to thrive and grow into the healthiest little human they can be if breastfeeding is not an option?
We would all love to breastfeed, we know it is best for our babies. But what if you are not able to or choose not to or, perhaps like me, you chose to start mix feeding? If you have either chosen not to breastfeed or cannot for a particular reason, we are told formula is the next best thing. Why does education stop there?

Some research can go a long way, but as many of us know researching formula after so many sleepless nights is nearly the last thing we want to do. But it is critical that you do because not all infant formulas are the same.

From personal experience, when I had my first baby I was naive about what went into a formula and what was most nutritious and clean for my daughter. I went with what my friends, medical professionals, and family recommended, and I never questioned it. However, when I had my second, I decided I needed to dig deep and begin my research. It was important to me that I find the best formula on the market. No nasty oils, no additives, no sugars, and no hidden nasties. I knew goat’s milk was my preference because I had learned it is much easier to digest.
Now, some might not even know what Palm Oil is, so let me explain:

Palm oil is a fatty acid that provides fat just like breast milk; however, palm oil can be very harsh on a baby’s digestive systems and does not allow the protein or fats of the formula to be broken down and absorbed efficiently. This results in less absorbed energy and lower bone density. It is always a common cause of constipation.

Just as concerning, palm oil is bad for the environment. It has caused large destruction and deforestation which has put many endangered animals at risk.

Many labels don’t call out palm oil – instead of using “vegetable oil” – so I encourage you to carefully read the labels.
Further, not only do we need to be aware of Palm Oil and the effects it can have on our baby’s health, but we also need to be aware of other must-avoid ingredients in formula, like:

• Canola oil
• Maltodextrin
• Soybean oil
• Glucose and other artificial sweeteners
• Added sugars
• Additives and Preservatives such as Citric Acid

Thankfully, with this knowledge on hand we can choose to provide the right type of nutrition for our children and continue to watch them thrive and grow in this modern-day world.
With love
Katie Cornelius

NATURAL BENEFITS OF GOAT'S MILK

-

Goat's milk, by nature and confirmed by science, is closer to human breast milk than cow's milk or soy, making it a natural and nutritious alternative to cow’s milk to help nourish children in their early years. Research highlights that goat’s milk may be more easily digestible than cow’s milk.

Goat Milk naturally contains A2 beta-casein goat protein and is a source of Magnesium, Calcium, Vitamin A and C. [R]
