We are what we eat

with Rachel Aldridge, Naturopath

The health of the immune system is greatly affected by a person’s nutritional status. Factors that reduce immunity include nutrient deficiencies, excessive sugar consumption and consumption of allergenic foods. Something that can feel like a real struggle with those fussy eaters!

A good wholesome diet is really the best medicine to support a healthy immune system – think colourful foods such as blueberries, raspberries, avocado and sweet potato, and natural immune boosters such as onion, garlic and turmeric. But if diet is a struggle, which it can often be with children, we are also able to use specific multivitamin mixes designed especially for little people.

Fortified milks, such as toddler milks, can provide added nutrients for picky eaters – of which most toddlers are! But beware:  not all toddler milks are the same.

Many toddler milks are mostly made of skimmed powdered milk, sweeteners, and vegetable oil and include high levels of sodium and fat. When picking one be sure to pick one that is made from whole milk – either goat or cow, no soy! – is free of palm oil, and does not include other cheap nasties like maltodextrin, corn glucose syrup or sweeteners.

In many cases, whole milk – again either goat or cow – together with a varied diet, should be able to provide a growing child with all the nutrients they need. But toddler formula can have a place, particularly if your child has a medical condition that inhibits their diet, is a severe fussy eater, has a severe milk or food allergy, or irregular growth.

Many paediatricians would recommend a hypoallergenic option but again take caution: many of them can be full of many synthetic ingredients.

While it might not be suitable for all, many children find goat milk more easier to digest and gentle on the tummy for many reasons including: the fact it is naturally A2, has fat globules that are easier to digest and is naturally full of oligosaccharides, or prebiotics, to promote a healthy gut.

Every child is different so if you have any questions, you can always email the Health Team at LittleOak at hello@thelittleoakcompany.com or get in touch with me directly to book a video consultation for your child by clicking here –  make an appointment today – and together we can get their health and you on the right track.

Stay happy and healthy!

NATURAL BENEFITS OF GOAT'S MILK

-

Goat's milk, by nature and confirmed by science, is closer to human breast milk than cow's milk or soy, making it a natural and nutritious alternative to cow’s milk to help nourish children in their early years. Research highlights that goat’s milk may be more easily digestible than cow’s milk.

Goat Milk naturally contains A2 beta-casein goat protein and is a source of Magnesium, Calcium, Vitamin A and C. [R]
