inspiring and honest stories from one mother to another

with Katie

We live in a world of uncertainty right now. If I have learned one thing over this past year it is how important your mental health as a mother is. As they always say when flying, always put your mask on first and then your infants because if you cannot breathe you will not be able to help your little one.

First of all, it is okay to ask for help. I was alone most of this year with two little ones, a newborn and a 3-year-old. It would be a lie to say my mental health didn’t suffer. Once I accepted the way I was feeling I knew I needed a little help. I decided if we were to make it through the longest lockdown in the world, I would need some tools to help me through.

One of the best things is scheduling time for you. It’s very hard to do. This is when your mum’s guilt comes into play. However, if you just schedule a little block of time into your planner just like you would an appointment it makes it a little bit easier. Even just a 15-minute walk can do the trick. It will give you time to reset and fill your cup a little bit more full.

Another key tool is good nutrition and lots of water. It doesn’t have to be big steps. Set goals for yourself. For example, pick a water bottle, and say to yourself I will finish this by lunch. Refill, and then say you will finish this by dinner. With nutrition when you go to grab a piece of chocolate put it down and switch it with a piece of fruit. The littlest changes will help change your body’s natural chemical composition to help your mental health and most likely increase your energy level.

Once you start setting time aside for yourself as a mom you will most certainly see changes in your little ones. They feed off of your energy, so if you aren’t going well they most likely are not. They need you to be the best you. This isn’t to say you still won’t have bad days. However in these times of great uncertainty, families separated, kids not going to school, masks being worn, it is a very different world for everyone but especially your children. They need you, more than ever, to be
their safe place.

Once again remember it is okay to ask for help.

With Love,
